For Michael Cagle, coaching isn’t just about the game—it’s about the people. From his early days volunteering with Randolph’s 8-man football team to now leading the Raiders’ softball and bowling programs, his journey has been defined by dedication and a deep connection to the school’s community.

“I first started coaching here at Randolph in 2005 when Kurt Page was the AD and started 8-man football,” Cagle recalls. “I got to know Coach Page and volunteered my time that first year. I stayed on for several years and was later asked to coach softball with Mike Broad. Being here at Randolph has been a pleasure because everyone is close, and it feels like a big family.”

That sense of family has kept him “ALL in” with the Raiders for nearly two decades, coaching multiple sports, including softball and bowling. “The students are so important—they’re willing to learn,” he says. “I enjoy spending time helping to develop their skills. No matter what I’m asked to do, I love helping the athletic program.”

Now in his second season as head softball coach, Cagle has embraced the challenges and lessons from his first year. “Patience and developing each player to their best potential—that’s what I took away from last season,” he says. His approach is hands-on and fundamental, ensuring his athletes master the basics before advancing their skills.

The 2025 Randolph softball team is shaping up to be a cohesive and competitive unit. “Last year’s team grew to respect each other and welcomed new players with open arms,” he says. That chemistry will be crucial as the Raiders strive to improve every game and make a deep postseason run this season.

At the heart of the team’s leadership are seniors Eliza McCrary, Madison Moore, and Lily Kate Swoboda. “They’ve been encouraging and ready to get us to that next level,” Cagle says. Their influence, both on and off the field, is vital as the team pushes toward its goals.

While postseason aspirations are high, Cagle measures success beyond the scoreboard. “It’s about knowing that these girls trust me as a coach and believe in what we’re teaching them,” he says. “It’s about their growth throughout the season.”

He instills a resilient mindset in his players, helping them navigate the highs and lows of competition. “I continuously tell them to believe in themselves. Flush it out of your system and move on to the next play,” he says.

One thing people outside the program may not realize? The dedication these athletes bring every day. “Win or lose, these girls give their all to better themselves and the team,” Cagle says.

Even after years on the Randolph sidelines, Cagle remains motivated by his athletes. “Each player pushes me,” he says. “I listen to what they ask and try to implement that when we can.”

His favorite drill—one the players might love to hate—is "Around the World," a pop fly-catching drill designed to sharpen defensive instincts. “It helps develop their skills, and it’s something we do regularly,” he explains.

Coach Cagle has a few proud moments he likes to speak of. Taking both the bowling and softball teams to regionals were some. But perhaps what matters most is the trust his players have in themselves. “That’s what makes coaching so rewarding—seeing them believe in themselves.”

As the season unfolds, Coach Cagle and the Randolph Raiders will look to build on their foundation, one play, one game, and one step closer to their postseason goals.
