Randolph Claims the Class 5A Volleyball Championship

On October 30, 2015, the Randolph Raiders volleyball team made history, capturing the Class 5A state championship with a thrilling 3-1 victory over powerhouse Lawrence County at Birmingham’s Bill Harris Arena. Down 1-0 after a close opening set, the Raiders roared back to win the next three sets, 21-25, 25-10, 25-17, 25-13, claiming Randolph’s first AHSAA volleyball title since 1985.

Under the guidance of first-year head coach Mindy Spalding, the Raiders (19-20) displayed resilience, rallying to save their best performances for the postseason. Randolph went on a memorable playoff run, winning seven of their eight postseason matches to secure the 5A crown. For Coach Spalding, who had previously served as assistant coach, the season culminated in bringing home Randolph’s first volleyball title since the team’s 1A championship three decades prior in 1984.

Leading the charge was Class 5A MVP Victoria Fennell, who dominated the championship match with 25 kills, eight digs, and two service aces. Libby Gold contributed a well-rounded performance with eight kills, three aces, and eight digs, while Julia Shoemake added seven kills and 11 digs. Setter June Harriman facilitated the offense brilliantly, tallying 41 assists to control the flow of play.

Lawrence County (61-9), coached by Robyn Hutto, was not an unfamiliar opponent for Randolph. The Red Devils had bested the Raiders twice earlier in the season, including a 3-0 sweep in the North Super Regional just the week prior. However, the championship match proved different, as Randolph’s relentless team play turned the tables. Senior Rachel Childress led Lawrence County with 13 kills, 14 assists, and 13 digs in a strong effort, while Ali Grace Shelton recorded 14 assists and Tori Smith added six kills.
