For Assistant Cross Country Coach Jacqui Krueger, Randolph School represents more than just a place of work—it’s where her passion for both teaching and coaching has found a home. As she enters her 10th year at Randolph, Coach Krueger reflects on her journey and the role she’s played in the development of student-athletes.

"This fall marks my 20th season of coaching at Randolph," Krueger shares, a milestone that speaks to her love of the school. Originally from Huntsville, she began her teaching career through Teach For America at Westlawn Middle School in the Huntsville City Schools district. When the opportunity arose to join Randolph, she saw a chance to grow in a more supportive environment, both as a teacher and a coach. "I came to Randolph seeking a place where I could develop, and that’s exactly what I found here."

With a strong background in collegiate running, Krueger's transition to coaching was a natural one. "I competed in cross country, indoor, and outdoor track in college. The atmosphere of coming together to better yourself and your team was something I loved," she explains. "My coaches were role models for me, and I saw coaching as another way to support students outside the classroom."

Managing a dual role as a math teacher and coach can be challenging, but for Krueger, it’s all about balance and time management. "I try to work efficiently so I can give time to my students, my athletes, and my own kids," she says. Her ability to balance these responsibilities is enhanced by her love of both data and athletics. "As a math teacher, I use data and statistics to help athletes see their progress in training. I do love a good Excel spreadsheet!" she jokes. But the numbers serve a serious purpose, showing her runners that the hard work they put in leads to tangible improvement.

When it comes to cross country, Krueger emphasizes that it’s a sport of character. "There’s no substitute for putting in the work, and the effort pays off as you get faster and fitter," she explains. "Cross country teaches toughness, grit, and perseverance, which are crucial for success in life. I enjoy watching athletes reach their goals, both individually and as a team."

One of the most rewarding aspects of coaching for Krueger is the long-term development she witnesses. "Our program spans Grades 7-12, so I get to watch athletes grow over the years," she says. "The relationships I build with kids and families, whether during races, team dinners, or long bus rides, are something I truly value."

Krueger fondly recalls her favorite moments as a coach. While she enjoys the thrill of a close 4x400 relay or the camaraderie of practice, it’s the final practice before the State Meet that stands out to her. "It’s Fall, the hard work is done, and the strategy is set. As Coach Twig always says, ‘the hay is in the barn,’ and the team is ready to give their best."

As for this season, Krueger is excited to see what the Raiders can accomplish, especially in the highly competitive 6A classification. "On paper, we’re underdogs," she admits. "But come Sectionals and State, strategy and hard work can trump virtual results. I’m excited to see what our team can do!"

Her ultimate hope for her athletes is simple: "I want them to understand that hard work and a good attitude can carry them far in life," Krueger says. And with her leadership on and off the course, Randolph’s runners are learning that lesson every day.

Make plans to coach the Cross Country teams on the course this season! The AHSAA Sectionals are also at John Hunt on Thursday, October 31st.
