Randolph Cross Country took its show on the road this weekend, traveling to Fayetteville, Georgia, for the AT&T Starr’s Mill XC Meet on Saturday morning at the beautiful campus of One Church.
The overnight trip provided the Raiders with an opportunity to face a large and competitive field from outside Alabama while also spending valuable time together as a team. From Friday’s travel and course preview through Saturday morning’s races, the weekend featured plenty of team bonding and another important early-season racing experience for Randolph’s varsity, junior varsity, and middle school athletes.

Saturday’s races were contested in very hot and humid conditions on a spectator-friendly course featuring multiple loops around Lake Brown. The layout gave spectators several opportunities to see and cheer for the runners during both the 5K and 3K races.

Randolph competed in five divisions throughout the morning, highlighted by an 11th-place Varsity Boys team finish among 31 scoring schools and a standout 5K from sophomore Brooks Johnson.

VARSITY BOYS FINISH 11TH IN 31-TEAM FIELD

The Randolph Varsity Boys turned in the Raiders’ strongest team finish of the morning, placing 11th out of 31 scoring teams with 330 points.
Sophomore Brooks Johnson led the way with one of the best races of his young high school career. Johnson covered the 5K course in 16:35, finishing 12th overall in the large varsity field.
Junior Wick Pfitzer gave Randolph a second strong performance at the front, crossing the line in 17:14 to finish 40th.
Senior Lucas Israel was Randolph’s third finisher, running 17:45 for 67th, while fellow senior Andrew Walker finished 107th in 18:31.
Junior Josh Berkholtz completed Randolph’s scoring five with an 18:52 performance for 122nd place.

Seniors and juniors provided additional depth behind the scoring five, with Landon Lee finishing in 19:27, Harper Guasti in 19:38, and Bryce Marion de Oliveira in 19:54.

WALKER LEADS VARSITY GIRLS

Junior Meredith Walker once again led the Randolph Varsity Girls, navigating the hot and humid 5K course in 21:36 to finish 36th overall.
Junior Miriam Tidwell was the Raiders’ second runner across the line, finishing 118th in 23:56, followed by sophomore Katie Cofield, who ran 24:27 for 138th.
Freshmen Kate Berkholtz and Haley Israel completed Randolph’s scoring five. Berkholtz finished 160th in 25:24, with Israel close behind in 25:38 for 163rd.
Senior Sophia Dooley finished in 26:24, while freshman Livvy Segrest rounded out the Randolph lineup in 28:55.

The Raiders finished 24th among 29 scoring teams with 580 points.

YOUNG RAIDERS GAIN EXPERIENCE IN JV 5K

Randolph fielded a young group of five runners in the JV Boys 5K, giving several underclassmen another valuable opportunity to race the full 5K distance.
Sophomore Michael Zhang led the Raiders with a 20:28 performance to finish 54th overall. Freshman Charlie Clark wasn't far behind, crossing the line in 20:47 for 64th.
Sophomore Tucker Lee finished in 22:22, followed by freshman Nate Smalley in 22:41 and freshman Henry Carter in 24:47.
Randolph finished 15th out of 23 scoring teams with 397 points.

MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS RUN TOGETHER AT THE FRONT

One of Randolph’s best examples of pack running came in the Middle School Girls 3K.
Seventh grader Meg Brigance led the Raiders with a 13:36 performance to finish 24th overall, but two teammates were right on her heels.
Seventh grader Olivia Landers crossed just two seconds later in 13:38 for 25th, followed two seconds later by eighth grader Lillian Orton, who ran 13:40 for 27th.
That meant Randolph placed three runners between 24th and 27th, with just four seconds separating the trio.
Seventh grader Tessa Manion completed Randolph’s group with a 15:49 performance for 93rd.

With four finishers, Randolph did not record a team score because five runners were required to score.

COLEY LEADS MIDDLE SCHOOL BOYS TO TOP-10 TEAM FINISH

The Randolph Middle School Boys closed out the Raiders’ racing with a ninth-place finish among 16 scoring teams, totaling 197 points.
Seventh grader Miles Coley continued his strong start to the season by leading Randolph across the line. Coley finished 26th overall in 11:53 over the 3K course.
Eighth grader William Deaver followed in 12:18 for 36th, while classmate Benjamin Brigance gave Randolph a third runner inside the top 50 with a 12:27, 43rd-place finish.
Eighth grader Henry Walker was just three seconds behind Brigance, finishing 47th in 12:30, while Bradley Sabatini completed Randolph’s scoring five in 12:42 for 56th.
The Raiders displayed plenty of depth behind their scoring group, with 12 Randolph runners completing the 3K.

MORE THAN JUST A RACE
While Saturday morning provided another important measuring stick for the Raiders, the value of the weekend extended beyond times and places.
Traveling together, previewing an unfamiliar course, spending the night away from home, preparing to race in a different environment, and competing against a large field of unfamiliar opponents are all valuable experiences for a cross country team.

The hot and humid conditions made Saturday’s races particularly challenging, but the Raiders competed through them and gained another opportunity to learn how to race when conditions aren't ideal.
Most importantly, the overnight trip provided plenty of opportunities for team bonding across Randolph’s varsity, JV, and middle school groups.
The Raiders leave Fayetteville with another race in the books, valuable experience gained, and another step taken forward as the 2026 season continues.
